Grave Error
You don't beat this world. You outlast it.
First-person zombie survival in a procedurally generated America. Play it alone or with up to three friends.
I · The update
It began with a software update.
The HACK program put adaptive nanobots in billions of minds. Then Core Update 3.0 shipped with a fatal flaw, and the bodies got back up.
In a few people the implants never took. They're called Nulls, and you're one of them. You can't turn. You can still die.
II · The Hacks
Notes on the Hacks
Every Hack used to live or work near where you find it. This is what's known about them so far.
- 01
They smell you.
The flaw tuned the nanobots in a Hack's nose to living skin and fresh blood. Your scent carries downwind, so keep the wind in your face.
- 02
Daylight slows them.
Hacks are sluggish in bright light. In the dark they're a lot more active.
- 03
Only the brain counts.
Destroy a Hack's heart or lungs and it keeps coming at a walk. A severed head keeps biting.
- 04
Wounds close.
A Hack doesn't bleed out. Its nanobots seal an opened vessel in about a second.
- 05
Hunger isn't why.
A Hack that has eaten can't feed again for about a day. It goes on hunting anyway.
- 06
Cold brings them back.
Someone killed in warm weather stays dead. Where a body lies below about 8 °C, it gets up again in about two days.
III · The world
A planet's worth of America.
The world is generated from a seed, and it's the size of the Earth: continents and islands, every one of them present-day America for now. Towns and cities are laid out street by street, and you can go into any building in them.
Getting somewhere on foot can take hours. That's on purpose. There's a real day and night, the weather matters, and hordes aren't scheduled. They gather on their own, drawn by noise, light and smell, or just drifting the same way.
